The Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria 2022 Tidy Town and Sustainable City winners have been announced!
Euroa, located in Strathbogie Shire, has been titled the Tidiest Town and The City of Melbourne the most Sustainable City in Victoria.
Euroa, with a population of just over 4000, is leading the way when it comes to sustainability, taking out three of the Victorian Premier Sustainability Awards at a ceremony on September 20. Projects such as the Euroa Arboretum is a testament to how the town is innovating to create thriving and sustainable spaces for their community. Euroa Arboretum not only won the Thriving Environment’ category but was also awarded the Premier’s Regional Recognition Award.
Strathbogie Mayor, Laura Binks says, “We are so incredibly proud of Euroa for taking out the 2022 Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria Tidy Town of the Year award,”
“We are so fortunate to have amazing community groups that drive sustainability; at Strathbogie Shire Council this is so important to us after we declared a Climate Emergency last year and recently adopted our Climate Change Action Plan.”
The City of Melbourne is also a trailblazer, with nine sustainability initiatives becoming finalists in the Premier’s Sustainability Awards, which saw them take home two winning awards in the Healthy and Fair Society and Sustainable Places and Destinations.
This year, the Tidy Towns and Sustainable Cities awards were calculated from the finalists or winners at this year’s Premier’s Sustainability Awards, delivered by Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria in partnership with Sustainability Victoria and The Banksia Foundation.
Lord Mayor Sally Capp stated, “Sustainability is one of our priorities at the City of Melbourne, and we are dedicated to meeting our emissions targets though projects like our renewable battery scheme, Power Melbourne, and ensuring Melbourne becomes cleaner and greener through initiatives such our Greening the City project, in which we are planting 150,000 native trees, shrubs and grasses.
“We are honoured to receive this award from Keep Australia Beautiful. It will inspire our staff, residents and traders to keep up all the great sustainability work we are doing as a municipality.”
Each winner is enabling community o empowerment, creating positive behaviour change, protecting their environment, reducing waste, engaging youth and indigenous communities, and promoting community spirit and resilience.
